Annebelle Lee

Annebelle Lee
By Edgar Allen Poe

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNEBELLE LEE.
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea:
But we loved with a love that more than love-
I and my ANNABELLE LEE;
With a love that winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
IN thsi kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud chilling
MY beautiful ANNABELLE LEE;
So that her high-born kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!-that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my ANNABELLE LEE.

But our love it was stronger by far tahn the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser thand we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Of the beautiful ANNEBELLE LEE.

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful ANNEBELLE LEE;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
of the beautiful ANNEBELLE LEE.
And so, all teh night-tid, I lie down by the side
Of my darling-my darling-my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

One of my favorite poems of his. I have a few more in the book I like. I dont know if it was worth what I paid for it. But I love going through certain poems every now and again and this is one of them. Just reading the love he had had for her is amazing. Some say Poe was crazy and had no family but you just never know with writers from this era.

I am ready to pull my hair out of my head. Its raining out today and the girls havent been outside and they are fighting like cats and dogs. I knew it was going to happen but I am ready to strangle both of them. I know its five o clock my time and I am making the girls lay down and rest. I really should have a rest time during the day earlier but havent needed one until recently. I get fustrated easily sometimes and today is one of them. But home schooling is going great for Kora. She can whip numbers off faster than her friends can even think of the problem. Its amazing. Her reading is coming along but slowly.

I have these Book It coupons I keep telling her if she can read two books by the end of the month I will take her out for a girls afternoon and we will have Pizza. But lately those havent even tempted her in reading. Instead of knowing what a word is she guesses on it. She refuses to remember her sight words and has to try and sound them out. But like I said she is getting there.

Anyway enough. I thought you would like my poem. It didnt take that long to type out either. LOL.. Catch you all tomorrow sometime.

That poem really was beautiful - but MAN - that guy is so MORBID!! lol! Poe is one seriously twisted dude.

Oh - let 'em go run around in the rain if it's not too cold - or lightening. That'll stop the fighting! ;-)

IAML your welcome. I was the on being bullied in school and have learned a few things since then. LOL... I just hate how she bashes you.

Monica I just might do that today. They both came in soaking wet yesterday when I did let them so I told them to come in the house. Its suppose to be a high of 68 today and no rain. So they can go out today.

Annabelle Lee is one of my favorite poems. I first read it in the late forties when I was a kid. I'll bet you'd also like Whittiers' "Maud Muller," and "Ostler Joe" by Sims.

I wrote a poem I call, "The Shack Just South of Town," in 1970 when I was attending Modesto Junior College on the GI bill you might enjoy. You can read it at this link. (You might need to copy and paste the link)

It's a beautiful poem, Tweetey. Here's a tip for future reference. Next time you want to post a famous poem or song, just search for it with your browser. If you type "Annabelle Lee" into your browser, you can then copy and paste the entire poem instead of having to type all of it. Check this out: Annabelle Lee.

Now, please don't pull the hair out of your head. It may not grow back! ;)

That is a great poem. Poe is actually a very good writer, but yeah, I think he had issues...

You mean bribing your kid with pizza isn't working? Geez...I'd be there in the blink of an eye if I could...

Wc no the bribes not working as well as I thought it would. LOl.. But she is doing well otherwise.

I liked the poem - it was sad (what about Poe isn't really? (I have a raven tattoo so don't totally agree he was twisted - I think maybe depressed a lot, but out of that came genius. But a beautiful example of love.

Ah, we all have those hair pulling days. AS insanely as we love the little ones in our lives, we sometimes need a breather - last night I took a glass of wine and went outside in the moonlight and watched my flowers for a while. The smell of dryers running late at night was in the air. I had to giggle - even the household things followed me to the garden....

Sometimes Math whizzes are a bit slower on the reading stuff. Just be patient, hang in there! You got a bright little girl, girls! And realize you are doing a very difficult job - full time mommy and teacher - cook, cleaner, bottle washer -

our little ADD guy doesn't work well with bribes either - or "rewards".....but we keep trying....now, immediate rewards seem to work for him better than in the future rewards....well, except for the headless horseman costume he wants -

take a few moments go lay in the grass and count ants if you have to!!!!! Pluck the little blades out - not your hair!!!!! Actually I only drink very, very lightly - but the glass of wine sort of put balm on my frayed nerves last night.....but wouldn't recommend it for everyone -

Take care....

I like your poem.

Perhaps Kora can perfect her reading skills while reading Poe.
